Students who transfer to the junior year of the Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology program, specializing in Computer Technology, are expected to have completed their freshman and sophomore years at a community college or similar institution and received their associate’s degree in a program of computer studies (i.e. computer science, computer technology, computer software, computer programming, etc). However, some of these jobs require advanced computer science and programming knowledge, so graduates must enroll in specialized programs or take elective courses. Topics covered include protocol design and implementation; low-level systems programming on the Linux, Android, and Windows platforms; network application software development using the TCP/IP protocol suite; wireless protocol design; and the design and implementation of device-level communications applications.
The Data Communications and Internetworking option specializes in network architecture design, software development, and network security skills. Approximately two-thirds of the curriculum consists of courses in systems programming, software development, testing and maintenance. In Level 06, students select an elective course from an approved list in areas which include graphics/multimedia, advanced database programming, android, business programming (Cobol), security and advanced web programming. Students gain the knowledge and skills to use a broad range of IT-based analytical thinking and problem-solving skills in support of the day-to-day operation of an enterprise`s software systems or in the development of new systems.
Under the guidance of expert faculty, combined with the use of leading edge labs, the program emphasizes the design, implementation, configuration, monitoring, troubleshooting, management, as well as the hands-on installation of networking, security, VoIP, mobile devices, virtualization, data storage and management, server, workstation and operating systems technologies. Students will learn about the architectures, features, and benefits of Intelligent Storage Systems; storage networking technologies such as FC-SAN, IP-SAN, NAS, Object-based and unified storage; business continuity solutions such as backup, replication, and archive; the increasingly critical area of information security; and the emerging field of cloud computing. Graduates of the various options may be qualified, respectively, for entry-level positions in system administration, computer programming, web development or database management, as well as positions as computer support specialists, and network or PC repair technicians.
Some graduates from this program enrolled into either Master of Science Computer Engineering Technology, Engineering Technology, Electronic Engineering, and/or related degree programs.
